Interests & Hobbies
I like listening to old songs, meeting people of different nationalities, working with the community and voluntary work.
Musical Background / History
I have always loved listening to Indian music especially to Lata, Rafi and Kishore Kumar tracks. I particular enjoy ghazals and like Sufiaana kalam (spiritual poetry). I have been involved with the BBC’s programme Sangeet Mahal where I introduced tracks and presented a slot on women’s issues, children stories and interviews.
How did you get involved in GFM?
A friend and I were introduced to GFM via an invitation to a meeting. Here we discussed a potential programme for Asian people. We had already similar experience at the BBC.
Achievements
I spent some time at the BBC co-presenting a programme for Asian women listeners as part of the weekly programme Sangeet Mahal. This involved speaking in Urdu, Punjabi and Hindi as many Asian women did not speak or understand English. They needed a programme in their mother tongue. The programme included discussion on many topics including education, health, social environment etc. I also recited Asian stories for children. I have also done some work as a support artist on BBC programmes such a casualty. I have also been in commercial adverts for national businesses and insurance companies.
Musical Aspirations
I would like to continue to present further programmes for the community. As a qualified Esol tutor I understand the different needs of the community and would like to serve them.
Most influential tracks
Nusrat Fateh Ali’s – Qawali
Mehadi Hasan’s –Ghazals
Message to GFM Community
I am very pleased to see that GFM have identified a need for a programme for the Asian community. I look forward to presenting any such programme and best wishes to GFM.
