A special school in Gloucester is asking for donations of old plastic bags, which will be recycled into a picnic bench.

Milestone School in Gloucester is one of only 14 schools in the country to be chosen to take part in a recycling competition organised by Warburtons bakery.

Staff at the bakers are offering a recycled picnic table to schools who collect as many used plastic bags as possible.

As part of its National Bread Week 2010 celebrations, Warburtons has teamed up with one of its suppliers, British Polythene Industries, (part-based in Stroud) to produce picnic benches from recycled materials.

Kate Cole, Waste Minimisation Officer for Gloucestershire County Council is supporting Milestone School in its efforts to collect the plastic.

“The school need donations of vegetable bags, carrier bags, bread bags, bubble wrap, shrink film around tins and drinks cans and films from around toilet roll and kitchen roll.

“Staff at Shire Hall are already busy collecting old plastic for the school.

“Members of the public can help too, by taking their old wrappers to school before the closing date of 2nd April.”

Cllr Stan Waddington, cabinet member for environment and waste, said: “This is an excellent project which truly demonstrates the benefits of recycling.

“Gloucestershire County Council is working with schools in the county to help educate children about recycling and this is just one of the many innovative ways of getting young people excited about rubbish.

“I would encourage everyone to support the school.”

Cllr Kathy Williams, county councillor for Longlevens, added: “I am very pleased that the school has been chosen for the environmental initiative by Warbutons.

“I hope that local residents will support the school and take in all their bags to help them collect as many as possible.

“This really does highlight the importance of recycling and what can be produced from recyclable materials.”

The recyclable materials will be collected from the school to be made into recycled picnic benches, which will be presented during National Bread Week, 3rd – 9th May.
