Children’s Summer Reading Challenge 2011

The theme for this year’s Summer Reading Challenge is Circus Stars. Children will be encouraged to read six or more books during the school summer holidays and collect rewards along the way, as well as a medal or a certificate for successfully completing their challenge.
Throughout the school summer holidays, libraries throughout Gloucestershire will run special Circus Stars themed events. You can find out what is happening by visiting the website at www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/libraries for a list of events.
The national, interactive Circus Stars website, www.circus-stars.org.uk has now launched, linking children with top authors and illustrators, and giving them the chance to talk about their favourite books and to share reading ideas.
Children can sign up for Circus Stars at their local library from 16th July, just before the school holiday starts.
The Summer Reading Challenge is run by The Reading Agency, an independent charity that works to inspire people to read more. It is supported by children’s publishers and takes place at libraries throughout the country every year. This is the 13th Summer Reading Challenge and it grows in popularity every year. Last summer, 11,189 children took part in Gloucestershire, with 7,992 (71%) of them completing the challenge and receiving their medal and certificate in school. Between them, they read a massive 302,000 library books.
Cllr Antonia Noble, Cabinet member for libraries, said: “The Summer Reading Challenge is a great way to keep kids entertained and keep up their reading over the holidays, so that they go back to school fired up and ready to learn. Our libraries have a great selection of books for children of all ages, so why not encourage them to sign up?”
