Gloucester’s first black BBC radio presenter, Evadney Campbell, has launched a PR agency called Shiloh PR, alongside her daughter Karen Campbell, aimed at reaching ethnic communities via the media.
Setting themselves the target of becoming the “No. 1 black-owned ethnic PR company in the UK, within five years”, The former BBC employees held their official launch event at the prestigious Jamaican High Commission in London.
Evadney Campbell MBE, who recently left the BBC after a career of over 25 years said: “The ethnic minority community in the UK has a spending power of £300billion. By any measures, that’s a huge, largely untapped market.”
Shiloh PR helps businesses that don’t know how to target this market, to reach a multicultural audience through the agency’s extensive contacts within the ethnic and mainstream media.
“In addition to helping brands to access ethnic communities via media, we also want to amplify the media presence of events, usually just focused on a niche black audience, by generating mainstream press coverage too,” explained Gloucester-born Karen Campbell.
"Many journalists would like to cover a diverse range of stories and to feature a broader range of people on screen and radio, but we’ve found that many in our community don’t know how to put themselves in the position to get their news out there," continued Evadney.
In addition to public relations, Shiloh PR will be offering training on how to access the media and maximise potential opportunities for publicity.
Welcoming guests to the launch, held at the prestigious Jamaican High Commission in London, the deputy high commissioner, Mrs Deidre Mills said: "Evadney and Karen are the epitome of what it means to achieve through hard work and dedication and to do so with a pride and dignity that have come to define Jamaican women…" she continued: "We congratulate both of you and look forward to many years of service, as we know this is but the tip of the iceberg”
Shiloh PR has already successfully carried out work for several major music events.
