Gloucester City Homes Is Supporting Street Athletics

Written by on June 10, 2013

On Saturday 15th June, Street Athletics is coming to Gloucester. Street Athletics is a movement created by Linford Christie OBE and Darren Campbell MBE dedicated to getting young people running and more involved in sport.

Young people from across Gloucester are being invited to come along to the newly re-opened Blackbridge Athletics track in Podsmead to race against each other over 60m.  This will give them the chance to compete, completely free, in the Grand Final in Manchester. Races will be held across four age groups: under-13, under-15, under-17 and under-20. Linford Christie will be at the event to talk to and encourage all the young people taking part.

The event is being supported by Gloucester City Homes, Gloucester Athletics club, GFM and the ‘Big Sports Local’ fun day, and there will be a wide range of entertainment, refreshments and sport-related activity for all the family.

Registration for the races will be between 12pm – 1pm in Poplar Road (entrance to the athletics track), with the races taking place between 1pm and 3pm. More information and online pre-registration is available at www.streetathletics.co.uk  (find the Gloucester event under the main events tab) or by logging on to http://www.gloscityhomes.co.uk/Tenants/GetInvolved/getinvolved@events/EventRecords/Street-Athletics.aspx

Anita Pope, GCH Director of Housing says: “This exciting event is a fantastic opportunity for young people to show Gloucester their sporting talent, and go on to compete at a national level – who knows where it could lead?”
