Roads challenge for new head of highways

Written by on May 5, 2010

There’s a new face at the helm of Gloucestershire County Council’s roads team.

Nigel Tomlinson will take over as Head of Gloucestershire Highways this week and among other things, he will be responsible for delivering the council’s repair programme Operation Road Rescue.

With the repair bill for the winter damage likely to be in excess of £5million on top of the existing budget, the council has real challenge ahead and Nigel will play a key role in that.

He said: “The next year will be a tough one for Gloucestershire Highways, there’s no doubt about that, but I am really looking forward to getting started.

“First of all I will be getting to know the people and the business and finding out how things work in Gloucestershire.

“I am particularly looking forward to working with elected members as their input into what we do is essential.

“The council’s already made a great start on repairing the winter damage through its Operation Road Rescue programme and I am eager to take this programme forward into the next stages.”

Nigel is a chartered civil engineer and joins Gloucestershire from his role with Atkins as Commission Director responsible for the Somerset Highways contract with Somerset County Council.

He is married to Louize and has two sons, Joshua nine and Charlie six. In his spare time, Nigel enjoys spending time with his boys at weekends, playing badminton and other racket sports.

Nigel is replacing Chris Rogan who is leaving Gloucestershire Highways after three years to take over an Atkins contract in Essex.

Cllr Stan Waddington, cabinet member for environment and roads, said: “Nigel is an excellent choice to take on this important role and I would like to welcome him to Gloucestershire.

“This is a tough job, but one that I am sure he is qualified to take on and I know he is keen to get started.

“I am looking forward to working with Nigel on the next stages of Operation Road Rescue and in all aspects of Gloucestershire Highways.

“I would also like to thank Chris Rogan for his excellent work during his time here and I would like to wish him well in his future career.”
