Schools urged to sign up to recycling

Written by on May 12, 2010

Schools in Gloucestershire have the chance to win up to £1,000, by gathering recycling pledges from their local community.

During Recycle Week (June 21st – 27th) every time someone recycles a small electrical item at their local Household RecyclingCentre they will receive a token with a unique code which can be awarded to a school of their choice.

The more tokens a school receives, the greater chance of winning a regional or national prize of garden centre vouchers worth £500 or £1,000 respectively.

Research shows that items such as mobile phones and larger electrical items like TV’s and vacuum cleaners are often recycled.

However, we tend not to think about recycling smaller electrical items like toasters, hairdryers and electric toothbrushes – these are perceived as ‘lesser value’ items and are thrownaway with general household rubbish or left to gather dust in the loft or garage.

Councillor Stan Waddington, cabinet member for the environment at Gloucestershire County Council said: “Three out of four people have broken, old or unwanted electrical items lying arounddoing nothing.

“During Recycle Week we want as many people as possible to take their broken or unwanted small electrical items to their local Household Recycling Centre.

“Not only will it benefit a school of the public’s choice, but also prevent such items being sent to landfill, which benefits the environment too.”

To have the chance of winning, schools must register their interest in the scheme before May 21st, by visiting www.recyclenow.com/schoolsignup

This website also provides access to a host of free Recycle Week materials for schools to use.
