Waste Strategy given the go ahead

Gloucestershire County Council will soon publish its blueprint for dealing with the county’s waste.
The Waste Core Strategy for 2012-27 is a planning document which, by law, all Waste Planning Authorities have to produce.
It sets out how we intend to handle all waste streams in the county and includes some strategic sites that are suitable for dealing with waste.
Yesterday, full council gave its approval for the next stages of the project which sees the strategy published for representations to be made.
Last year, the council carried out extensive consultation to find out what people thought about 13 sites being proposed for inclusion in the strategy.
More than 450 people submitted their views on the sites being put forward and planners have used that feedback in determining the final list of sites.
The four locations that will be included as strategic sites within the Waste Core Strategy are:
a. Wingmoor Farm East
b. Wingmoor Farm West
c. Javelin Park
d. Landat Moreton Valance
They’re included as strategic sites that could potentially be used for dealing with waste.
Any proposals for waste treatment on these sites would need to go through the normal planning application process.
There are 14 strategic polices covering matters such as criteria for dealing with recycling and composting and also other polices relating to aspects of environmental control such as flood riskand transport.
The Waste Core Strategy is separate to the council’s deferred residual waste project which is progressing alongside but now likely to report in the New Year.
The fact that Government has withdrawn PFIcredits for the residual waste project has no impact on ou r need for a Waste Core Strategy.
The Waste Core Strategy has to go through a planning process, with the final strategy subject to detailed public examination and Government sign off.
Cllr Chas Fellow,cabinet member for environment and planning, said: “We’ve carried out extensive consultation with the public to gauge opinion on how and where we should deal with our waste.
“We have drafted our strategy using the feedback from the public and ensuring that the sites included met the necessary criteria.
“The next stage will be to publish this document formally and people will have the chance to give representations when that happens.”
We will publish the Waste Core Strategy during December.
When published the strategy and supporting documents will be made available at www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/wcs.
