Wiping out food waste in our schools

Written by on November 1, 2010

Nearly 6,000 school children across the county have signed up to Wipe out Waste in their packed lunches.

As part of Gloucestershire County Council’s Waste Reduction Challenge, taking place between 20thand 28th November, schools have signed up to cut out the amount of food waste produced at lunch times.

Children taking part in Wipe out Waste will be encouraged to think carefully about what they put into their packed lunches with the aim of throwing away as little as possible.

For those who have school meals, they will be asked to think about portion size to help them clear their plates and cut down on leftover waste.

So far, 30 schools have signed up to take part and each will receive a visit from Gloucestershire County Council’s Waste Management Education team, who will provide fun, interactive activities for the children.

Each school will also receive posters promoting Waste Reduction Challenge and lunchbox/snack box stickers for children.

It’s still not too late for more schools to take part, and each of them will receive an information pack.

Cllr Stan Waddington, cabinet member for environment and waste, said: “The Wipe out Waste project is a fun and interesting way to engage with children and encourage them to learn more about reducing their waste.

“We’ve found that getting children to understand the waste pressures and the need to reduce, reuse and recycle is a great catalyst to encouraging their parents to do their bit too and that is ultimately our aim.

“I am delighted that so many children have signed up to take part, it shows how seriously our young people are taking the waste challenge.”

If you need any more information on what we’re doing visit People are asked to reduce their waste, reuse what they can and recycle or compost as much as possible.

For the Waste Reduction Challenge – from November 20th until 28th –people across the county are being urged to make at least one pledge to cuttheir waste.
